The Story of Creation 2: The Layered Creation of the Cosmos

Creation is read as a chain of manifestations reaching from a single substance to endless colour. Light (indetermination · Aḥadiyya) → al-Samāʾ (union) → Samāwāt (distinction): the Light is quantised, passing from the indefinite to the definite, from Aḥadiyya to Wāḥidiyya. The seven Sufi degrees of descent are mapped throughout; in each heaven one divine name is sovereign, and the angels organise the differentiation of union into distinction. A striking observation on language: God addresses the angels as “I” and humankind as “We”.

The text below is Felsufi's own essay in reading and reflection. It may carry approaches that differ from classical tafsīr — Sufi interpretation, synthesis with modern science, the Risale-i Nur perspective. Because it is the author's personal ijtihād, alternative classical readings exist; this text makes no claim to a single correct reading — it offers a perspective.

The story of the cosmos' creation is a chain of manifestations reaching from a single substance to endless colour. Through Samāʾ and Samāwāt, central concepts of Qur'anic cosmology, we will draw a layered map of existence: from Wāḥidiyya to Aḥadiyya, from union to distinction, from Light toward density.

Light — the Single, Homogeneous Source

At the beginning there is a oneness called Light: a substance interfused and without determination — unfixed by concepts, without drawn boundaries.

Lā taʿayyun is the highest degree of being, where the Divine Essence stands without appearing in any name, attribute or manifestation. This degree is sometimes called Aḥadiyya.

24:35

“God is the Light of the heavens and the earth.” — Al-Nūr 24:35

This highest presence is the degree at which absolute being subsists without relativity, relation, attribute or multiplicity. No name, act or relation has yet appeared. Nursî and the great Sufis call this the unseen of the unseen or the hidden treasure. Here even being has not taken a name, for there is no knowing and no determining.

Seven Degrees — Descent from Essence to Cosmos
The chain of descent — existence in procession
1 · Indetermination
Aḥadiyya — the Essence in purity · Light
2 · First determination
The names known summarily · al-Samāʾ
3 · Second determination
The names in detail · Samāwāt and the Names
4 · World of spirits
Malakūt — angels, meaning, the semantic world
5 · World of images
Analogies, relation, the symbolic world
6 · World of witnessing
The material, observation, the syntactic world
7 · The perfected human
A model of the cosmos representing every degree within

From Samāʾ to Samāwāt — Quantisation

From this homogeneous Light the equally homogeneous al-Samāʾ is created; not yet subject to distinction, it is in union. Yet this Light is quantised within creation — divided into discrete forms:

2:29

“Then He turned to the heaven and fashioned it into seven heavens.” — Al-Baqara 2:29

11:7

“He created the heavens and the earth in six days, and His Throne was upon the water…” — Hūd 11:7

The heaven is a sea whose waves have come to rest. — Nursî

This quantisation is the passage from indetermination to determination, and likewise from Aḥadiyya to Wāḥidiyya. The Light has now taken plurality under the name Samāwāt.

A parallel with modern physics — the author's reading
In quantum field theory, particles before they are particles are field waves without names. As these waves vibrate with particular properties there arise two-interaction particles (leptons), three-interaction particles (quarks), and the bosons mediating between them. Quantisation thus arises as differing waves upon a shared sea. This is the author's analogical reading; classical Sufi literature does not use these modern concepts.

Samāwāt — Distinction and the Layered Structure

Samāwāt names a cosmic and metaphysical plurality beyond physical layers. Each heaven is earth relative to the layer above and heaven relative to the layer below.

65:12

“God created seven heavens, and of the earth their like.” — Al-Ṭalāq 65:12

This is an ontological, not merely spatial, plurality. Each heaven carries a command, a divine name, a wisdom. In his treatise on the Ascension, Nursî states the cosmos was created layer upon layer, and that in each heaven one name is sovereign, the others subordinate to it.

The Angels — Branches of the Tree of Being

The angels are the intermediary beings created from light within this quantised, discrete and functional cosmos.

What comes about through the angels
TRIGGER
Things receive names
Determination — from indefinite to definite.
STATE
Local and global
Boundaries and frames come into being.
STATE
Inner and outer part
Selfhood and other become possible.
Numbers gain meaning
One, two, three… multiplicity is now countable.

God conveyed to each heaven a particular command, and had it carried out through the angels — a reading attributed to Ibn ʿArabī's cosmology in al-Futūḥāt al-Makkiyya.

This shows that in each celestial layer a divine name manifests as agent. The angels are the cosmic mediators who organise the differentiation of union into distinction.

The Station of “We” — the Divine Pronouns

“I” ⇄ “We” — the station of address
Ana — “I”
When addressing the angels. Metatemporal — an address from the station of union.
“I am creating a human being” — Ṣād 38:71
Oneness · Aḥadiyya
Naḥnu — “We”
When addressing humankind. A style from the station of distinction, referring to the plurality of the heavens.
“And We indeed created the human” — Al-Muʾminūn 23:12
Multiplicity-in-unity · Wāḥidiyya

38:71

Addressed to the angels — in the pronoun I.

23:12

Addressed to humankind — in the pronoun We.

Union and Distinction — the Cosmic Dialectic

The cycle — in five steps
TRIGGER
Light → Heaven
Union.
STATE
Heaven → Heavens
Distinction.
STATE
Commands, angels, layers
Separation — organisation.
STATE
Each being reflects Aḥadiyya
Determination — singularity.
The return of the differentiated
Union — all returns to the gathering.

Conclusion — From Light to the Heavens

The process reaching “from heaven to the heavens” is a metaphysics of manifestation. The Light is united as Heaven, then differentiated as the Heavens. Each being attains singularity by determination — yet all are in essence the place of manifestation of one and the same Light.

This eternal journey from Light to the Heavens, from unity to multiplicity, from the infinite to the countable — this ascension — is the deep memory of an existence continuing within us at every moment.

About the series · citations
This is the second essay in the Story of Creation series. All 2 essays of the series are on the site. — The citation from al-Futūḥāt al-Makkiyya is Ibn ʿArabī's, and “a sea whose waves have come to rest” is Nursî's; both are the author's own selections. The essay also cites a hadith report concerning al-Samāʾ (Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, al-Tirmidhī). The Arabic is taken from the site's canonical Qur'anic source.15.
